It's been a while, 2 years actually since the last post on here. I blame a subtle blend of covid, laziness, and general life haha. I'm still active and haven't called it a day just yet!

I just revamped the WEBSTORE, changing from Shopify to LimitedRun platforms (for cost reasons). Shopify has a monthly rate, whereas LimitedRun offers a percentage of sale per month, which, on a small scale shop such as mine, works better. It's brand new to me, so let me know if you've any issues and we'll sort it out.

Everything is basically the same - same categories with some small exceptions. I added a "From Ireland" category to better represent the amazing punk bands that come from here and give those of you not from Ireland some insight to what we have to offer :) I've also created a GIFT VOUCHER item as an option in case you want to buy someone a record but they're so ridiculously picky with their music taste that no matter what you get they'll be disappointed.

I have a load of stock that I need to add to the store, so I'll be doing that over the coming weeks and hopefully getting new stock soon.

Last but not least, I've got some cool updates coming very soon... dot dot dot!!
Chainbreaker Recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13748527486044094985noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2055119444932871452.post-78158822984254314072021-05-13T13:40:00.000-07:002021-05-13T13:40:31.463-07:00CHAINBREAKER... MERCH??
I guess lockdown has affected us all in different ways... some people have taken up exercise, some people have sorted out their garden because it's been annoying them for the last 4 years... actually some people have been entirely unaffected which is pretty cool too.

My coping mechanism has been trying to make plans that I know won't be cancelled, and one of those plans has been some CHAINBREAKER MERCH! Inspired by a combination of boredom and the desire for a new hoodie, I got these designs made up by my good friend Lukasc and also Robyn from Fear My Nerves and the clothing was printed by Absurd Merch based in Sligo, Ireland.

I got very little of these made (because who can afford to make 1000 hoodies) so if you want one, grab one asap. You can get them through BANDCAMP or through the WEBSHOP.

Cheers!
Chainbreaker Recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13748527486044094985noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2055119444932871452.post-74330364655555953072021-05-13T08:43:00.000-07:002021-05-13T08:43:13.587-07:00TENUE (INTERVIEW)
Thanks for doing the interview! What are your names and what do you do in the band?

Hey, thanks to you for contacting!

We are Daniel (drums); Miguel (guitar and vocals); and Álex (bass and vocals).

I only discovered you recently, but ‘Anábasis’ has been around since 2018! Where have I been??! Anyone can look up the definition, but in terms of the album name what does Anábasis represent to you?

We are a small band from a small town, nobody knows us hahaha.

Anabasis, for us, means making an expedition into ourselves, a great introspection of how capitalism and patriarchy affect our human condition and the relationships we generate in our day-to-day lives. Without that anabasis, we cannot dynamite those power relations.

The album is currently sold out, any sign of a re-press or do you know if any of the labels have any copies left?

Some labels have told us that they have a missing copy. We don't know who may have Dingleberry in Germany. Some labels have offered us to re-press the album, but we always find it tedious ... everything that has to do with orders, sales and distribution ... is a hassle.

There’s a lot I love about the records as a whole. There’s a lot of thought that has gone into the writing with song structure and overall atmosphere, as well as the imagery and metaphors used lyrically to emphasise the ideals of the band. On a simpler note, I fucking love the guitar/bass tones. What gear are you using?

Well, we recorded the bass with an Orange guitar amp, but live we played with an Ampeg with Fuzz. For the guitar a Mesa Boogie and a lot of pedals... In the recording we used a few other things, like several guitars... And some small amps that emulated the Marshall JCM 800 and something else. We are not musicians and we don't have much idea of what things our producer Iván lent us... hahaha

In comparison, your first release (DEMO MMXVII) sounds very DIY, which is a big leap in the space of 1 year to the release of your album. Of course DIY is never a bad thing! But why did you choose to re-record ‘Am-Ar’ and release it on ‘Anábasis’? Did you start writing some of the other songs from Anábasis before the demo was recorded?

Between the Demo and Anabasis we change the tuning, lowering the guitar one more tone. Am-Ar was a strong song and we really liked how it adapted to the new tuning. Cisma was also an old song that we had when we recorded the Demo. Anábasis is somewhat less thought out on a compositional level than our new album Territorios...

The new LP is due out in May - what can we expect from it? Have you tried to achieve something different or new for you in terms of the music/production?
Note: These questions were written in March!

Territorios has been online since March 31st online and we are delighted with the welcome. We have already sold all our vinyl copies and that seemed impossible to us. We thought we weren't going to sell anything in this situation. The album, at the production level, is similar, since we recorded it in the same studio. Of course, at a compositional and conceptual level it is something else. We follow the same frantic line and try not to repeat parts, we mix many styles ... In short, we have done what we wanted. A half hour song? I don't know why we have done that. For proving to ourselves that we could, I suppose.

I heard a rumour that there’s some great bands from Galicia… aside from the obvious influences of Ekkaia/Ictus etc. what do you guys listen to that inspires your writing?

Galician bands will always be our first inspiration. But we didn't just grow up with what was later called neocrust. In fact, when we started playing, these bands no longer existed and neither did that scene. We started out playing in hardcore and punk bands, in fact we continue to have side projects of that kind. Tenue was born as an emo band - the songs before the demo - that has nothing to do with what it is now. What has always inspired us has been the underground scene, punk, the local bands of our town, the political projects started here... On a compositional level, the first album by Drei Affen influenced us a lot when we started - in fact this band was made in a week to play with them - but in the end we tried a little of everything, because we love from the dirtiest punk to psychedelia and trap.

Looking forward to the new release!

So, I was over in Barcelona with some friends (shout out to the Sauselona gang 2018) and as always I was on the prowl for punk shows. I eventually found one by chance, I didn’t know what it was or where it was (thank fuck for google maps - if they want to read my text messages about I’ve run out of hummus that’s fine as long as they let me use maps to navigate to gigs), but the headlining band was captioned as crust. SOLD. Cans of Mahou for 1 euro (I think it was actually a suggested donation) and the guy behind the bar was wearing a 1916 t-shirt. That’s when you know you’re in the right spot, and are staying there for the rest of the night. And that’s when I first heard Knür. Pure fucking catchy neocrust, smart enough to keep things interesting, and executed amazingly well live.

What was the name of that squat? I have no fucking idea haha, but I remember how awesome it was, and there was some kind of punk shop next door to it?

The gig we met it was in Blokes Fantasma, an historic squat really close to Kasa la Muntanya, the oldest squat in Catalunya. The punk shop next to the gig it's the distro they got in there where you can find albums, t shirts and anarchism and libertarian books.

What does Knür mean?

We took cuz it sounds good but it comes from old Scandinavian language that meant the knots of the trees... it wasn't exactly Knür. And it means pig in Polish - we learned it later haha.

You’re from Molins de Rei - what’s the scene like there? And how did you all meet?

Yes we are all from Molins. Having in mind that Molins it's a town (even if here live about 26000 people) we can say that we have a strong social network in between the young people and a lot of implicated people in social movements (not only punks or anarchists) . It makes so easy to meet with friends and play. In our particular case, we are friends since childhood, so it's been even easier for us to compose together and make the band.

Let’s talk about ‘Sapere Aude’. I think you guys have had a consistently good sound, but did you approach the writing and recording of the new album any differently? Where did you record? You recently had a line-up change right? How did that go? How has it changed the band?

This album is special for us because it's the first one we recorded ourselves in our rehearsal room. We did the mixing and mastering with Xavi from EM Estudi. We are so excited about the final sound and we are waiting for the final release in vinyl. About composing, like I told you before it's been easy for us to write songs and play together because we are close friends and we know each other pretty well and most importantly, we love music.

This last album it's also special because is the last one with Sergi, one of our guitarists. He has left the band: Smint, our drummer until now, it's going to play the guitar with Guim. It's been a tough year because of that. Having the album all recorded but not being able to present it in live. We have been playing gigs again the lasts months thanks to Lluís, another friend of us from our town that plays drums really well (even he never played crust before). However, the idea is that Pau, another childhood friend from Molins is going to be the new Knür's drummer.
What gear do you guys play with live? Do you use anything different when recording?

We use almost the same gear in live shows than in recordings. The only change is that we recorded with the drum kit of a friend that let us play with his (because it's a better drum kit).
The rest of it it's exactly the same. (Orange Dual terror and Peavey 5150 guitar amps with 2x12 orange cabinet and a 4x12 Peavey cabinet; An Ampeg amp for the bass with an Orange 4x12 cabinet). The guitar clean parts of the Sapere Aude Album are all recorded with the Orange Dual Terror because we preferred the sound.
I wanted to ask you a question on tour plans - but maybe it’s a sensitive topic right now given all of the shit that’s going on in the world right now and the uncertainty that surrounds everything. So maybe, a better question would be where would you most like to tour?

As you know, we had in mind to go to Euskadi for 3 shows and then come to Ireland to play 3 more shows. However, we had to cancelled it because of the pandemic...
We have in mind still to come to Ireland and maybe make a 2-3 weeks tour in August around Germany, France, Denmark, Holland, Poland, Czech Republic and Switzerland to present "officially" the Sapere Aude album. But it's soon to tell...We are all working in different shitty jobs and it's so hard to manage to find free days to travel together.

What was your first show? Where have you played, and what was the best food you had on tour?

Our first show was exactly 1 year after creating the band. It was in September of 2015 in Kasablanka, another squat in Molins that it's been squatted since 1996. It was during the local celebrations in our town.
In most of the places we played, there's been a really nice vegan food and it's hard to chose and remember all of them. But if we have to chose one, we would stand out the amazing dinner we had in Lübeck during the summer tour in 2018: stuffed peppers with vegetables, all spiced perfectly, and cooked in the oven. Delicious!
Do you only sing in Catalan? Of course I respect your choice to sing in Catalan, and in my opinion I love the sound and feel of the language (also, fuck everything being in English all the time) - but I guess I would like to hear your thoughts on why you choose to write in Catalan and why is it so important to you?

Yes we do sing in Catalan. We also sing in Spanish but just a little part in the last song of the first album (La extinción del Humano), another little part in the 2th (La última de las Tempestades) and 1 entire song about the Zapatists in the Sapere Aude album that the lyrics are from Eduardo Galeano that wrote in Spanish (Príncipes Condenados a la Servidumbre).
It's an interesting question for us "why is it so important for us to sing in catalan"; We will try to explain it in a few words:
We were all born in Catalunya, that maybe some of you will know that nowadays it belongs to Spain. But if you search a little bit about our history you will see that it isn't always that way... There's been a persecution of Catalan Culture since we lost the 1714 war against the fucking Borbons family (Felipe V was the king in that moment). This persecution it's been more notorious during the dictatorship of Franco when we lost the Civil War that started in Spain in 1936. All anarchist ideas that were all at its fullest splendor before starting the war were totally destroyed. Two days after the fucking fascist, Franco, died peacefully in his bed in 1975 the king Juan Carlos de Borbón (descendent of Felip V and father of the current king of Spain, Felipe VI) supposedly assumed the control of Spain. Since that moment the people were told that Spain was, and still is, some kind of Parliamentary Monarchy. Our mothers and fathers grew up thinking that after the Civil War anything would be better; and it was their mistake...After 40 years of dictatorship, Spain wasn't in the line to compete against France, Germany and all the others "big" countries of Europe. The modernization and the progress in the last years it's been mental, times have changed a lot and Fascism changed its clothes too. But the problem nowadays is even bigger because of Capitalism and this Economic Dictatorship that reigns in almost every country in the world...
But going back again to your question, you would probably ask yourselves why an anarchist band worries about countries division or some shit like that...nothing further than reality:
The thing is that we are against any kind of Fascism or any form it takes. The reality here in Spain nowadays is that we still have Franquist Governors but now they wear fancy tie suits. We have got more political corruption than in any other European country in fuckin EU and social injustice and misery are spreading, like in the rest of the world, fastly. We do not believe in some kind of Catalan State or something like that, we just want to express freely in all the languages and different cultures that we have here from all over the world. In fact, you probably know that it were a Referendum here in Catalunya, like it happened in Scotland, about being an Independent Country. Most of the people voted to do not belong anymore to fucking Spain. The Central Spanish State ilegalize the votation and after that the persecution against Catalan Culture or simply people who disagree against power has reached like in times of dictatorship (people in prison just to write some words against spanish fascist state in social networks, musicians and artists persecution and in short, all people that stand up against fascism). We are against this racist, xenophobic and fascist Spanish State that still persecutes all the ideas that are different from his. A lot of people is waking up against social injustice and corruption. We see in Independence, an opportunity to change the paradigm, to try new ideas, to debate, to build ourselves a fair country, and to be, why not?!, the catalyst for the liberation of the rest of zones in Spain (like Euskadi, Asturias...). We feel catalan because it's our roots the same way Bakunin felt Russian, not in terms of National Identity. We do not give a fuck if people wants to feel Spanish, Catalan or Irish. We do care about the people that are tired of misery and poverty, sick of Europe Union fascist ideas and the global Capitalism that USA forced to the rest of the world.

Just to end, notice that we are bilingual, we speak perfectly spanish and catalan.
But we sing in Catalan because it's our language, the one that we speak every day of our life.
It definitely feels like you have perfected your art, the writing and execution is awesome and tempo changes like in ‘Life Lost’ are rocking. Did you approach the writing of this album differently? Has the focus of the lyrics or style as a band changed a lot?

Hi there! The last album feels more mature than previous things we’ve released, I think we just have improved at skills as the whole track list of the album has been played tons of times at gigs, tours, and so on so it was pretty clear how to cope with the stuff we had when came to the studio, just with a few adjustments during the record sessions and stuff. This one differs a bit musically from the previous albums, it came out way heavier, way more “concrete” or something like that. Lyrically it feels pretty same to me, I did most of the lyrics this time, so it’s more about some personal view on things plus some own life-experience depicted.

What is the scene like in Moscow for crust/stenchcore?

The local scene represents a various number of bands playing in any sorts of possible sub-genres and stuff. There are some stenchcore bands here as well, mostly from other towns of the European part of Russia and all are our good homies - Repression Attack, Step to Freedom, Karzer, there are some from the ex-soviet Republics like Pomrachenie of Minsk and even something from Kazakhstan, I’ve heard lately .However in spite of the matters of distance between towns and shit if there are any intercity events to occur all these bands do play together at some of the craziest gigs ever haha!

You guys have played Europe extensively - where are the top 3 places you would like to tour?

Europe is extremely good when tour with a band, there are so many amazing venues kept awesome in really professional way. Most of them rule! Personally most memorable ones are Shrottbar in Switzerland, Zoro in Lepzig, and Kopi for sure! Plus many more, the list might be endless.. Always Looking forward to visit more places and countries we’ve never been to. We highly appreciate such moments.

Favourite show you ever played and why?

A hard sort of question haha, can’t remember most of shows due to different circumstances, there were some memorable ones I guess, the gig in Tokyo with Life, and Coffins during the Japanese tour with ZAY in 2018 was a total banger, maybe the best one for me personally by this moment.

In terms of gear (guitar, bass, drums) what are you using at the moment? Has this changed a lot since you started? What did you record ‘Edge of the Wild’ with?

Haha oh man, It has changed a lot since the start of the band – I believe we had the shittiest gear ever, cheap guitars and pedals and all sort of that, sounding like shrieking noisy piece of crap. We changed lost of equipment, I guess we’ve hardly ever used the very same set of everything on each record, changing or borrowing them every time. For the last years we have played mostly Ibanez stuff if talking about guitars and shit –For now I use an Ibanez “destroyer” guitar circa 1985 with an adjusted Dimarzio” super distortion” pick up instead of the original one, for an amp I use my Sovtek MIG100, the most fierce amp I have ever tried, so respectively used this stuff for the “Edge of the Wild” as well. The bass player, Roman, used an Ibanez bass as well, some sort of superstrat basses of the kind.
I consider that the amount of “funny stories” is overwhelming us from time to time haha! Wasted state of mind always bears the craziest situations ever possible, it could have been written a compilation-book including best of them…. Fine, I dunno if it was funny or witty enough to pay $1000 charge bill after showing a dick to a copper and walking naked around Tokyo in the night ahahha. Different shit occurs all the time.
You hinted at big plans for 2020… what are you hoping to achieve this year as a band?

So everyone is familiar with covid-19 shit, and it’s pretty same here, everything is shut down and it’s unable to go on tours for a while, so most of the plans of that sort are postponed for an uncertain point in future. Meanwhile we have just recorded a bunch of tracks for a long-awaited split release, made some brand new ones and more that in work are to come out in a while. Stay tuned and Crust on!
Thanks for the interview mate!
Cheers from Moscow.

I com us vau conèixer?

On l’ heu gravat?

KNUR - SAPERE AUDE LPDelighted to announce the TENTH Chainbreaker release, and what a ripper of a record!! Knür come from Molins de Rei in Catalonia, and play a powerful, intricately constructed style of neocrust. Formed in 2014, their efforts have came to fruition in the form of this latest release 'Sapere Aude', which is a Latin phrase roughly translated as 'Dare to Know', or 'Dare to think for yourself '.

I have to say (and yes I am totally biased) but this record has everything. Starting from the artwork and booklet printed on textured card with illustrations and lyrics, through to the music, execution, and associated beliefs and politics which of course come hand in hand with the genre. I've lost track of how many times I've listened to it at this stage, and every time I do something new catches my attention... my favourite track off 'Sapere Aude' has changed maybe 3 times AT LEAST.

Very happy to be a part of this release, and it's been a cool little journey - from seeing the band live in some squat in Barcelona, to helping them release their latest LP. It's moments like this that make the whole DIY label thing totally worth it.

Anyways, enough rambling - PRE-ORDER for this LP is now available here!! They're expected to land in June - so stay tuned, and time for the album to speak for itself...
How did you all meet?

Speedkobra was born in Berlin in late 2015 from the ashes of Suburban Uproar and Hangover Generation. Sandro (Lead guitar), Nick (rhythmic guitar), Fede (drums) and Moro (bass) started to Jam some new riffs and experiment some new sounds together and few months later Gaspare (Vocals) joined us and completed the first line up.
In 2017 we lost our friend Nick and we tried to continue as a 4 man line up. In 2018 Rappo joined us as second guitar.

I was so sorry about the loss of one of your members and you all have my sympathies. Some bands might break up after something like this, what kept you going and kept you together?

The thing that kept us going was that, before being a band, we are a bunch of friends, a family; some of us know each other for more than 10 years, we were also living together and the music was (and still is!), as Nick always said, the cure for this messy life.

Individually, what would be your main influences as musicians?

Gaspare main influences are Tragedy, Disfear, At the Gates, Sepultura and Brutal Truth. Moro likes Hellshock, Skaven and japanise crust/Metal punk bands like Effigy, G.I.S.M. and A.G.E.
Sandro like stuff like Pantera, Aus-Rotten. Fede influences come from exploited, broken bones and the uk punk scene of the 80’s. Rappo like Bolthrower and entombed. All of us are really bonded with the Italian 80’ hc punk scene BUT we generally listen to all kind of underground fom punk to hip hop.

The split LP with Stront was released in 2017 (which really doesn’t seem that fucking long ago JESUS). Since then, your sound has changed quite a lot, it seems more directed, more focused. Was your approach to writing ‘Days of Madness’ any different?

Losing a member with a big "punk" influence as Nick, made Sandro the only guitarist for a while, and his metal influences went way much more important. With the addition of Rappo and his metal/grind background we turned even more in that direction.
Days of Madness is an album that has different souls inside, songs that Nick created with us, some we made in the four member formation, and some with Rappo.

Where did you record ‘Days of Madness’? How did the recording process go?

The album was completely tracked in our rehearsal room by Rappo and Moro, mixed by our friend Steve and the Mastered by Deadair Studio.
It has been a long process since we had many problems with our Hardware (we even burned a Mac in the process ahah), but for the first experience as self-recorder and we are pretty satisfied about the final work.

What gear do you all play with live? Did you use anything different when you recorded?

Sandro plays a ENGL thunder, Rappo a Quilter Overdrive 200 and Moro a Orange TB500
The Guitars in the album were recorded using a Marshall Plexi kindly borrowed to us by Indian Nightmare who we are sharing the rehearsal room with.

If you HAD to pick a favourite song (or two…) from the latest album, what would it be?

Our favourite song are definitely Dehumanized and 10 Days of Madness. 10 Days of Madness is also the song that gave the name to the album and talk about what happened during our first tour. That’s a funny one.

When the whole COVID-19 finally fucks off, do you have any plans to tour this year?

We were already planning something, but the situation put us on standby. We are using this time to compose new stuff, prepare some new merch, and getting ready for (better) times.
Favourite show and why?

It's difficult to pick up just one, when mostly every time we play something crazy happens!
When there is a good vibe in front of us, we feel it for sure!

As a touring band, you always learn from being on the road. Give us your top tips for surviving tour life!

First off, you need to be patient and independent. Take it easy when bad things happen, and don’t be an asshole with the crew. Don’t waste time on futile things, like taking a shower when it’s not necessary. Declare your farts when you are in the van.
Having a clean driver is a surplus, If you don’t have it, be very careful with alcohol and drugs: Some countries have very strict laws as a lot of you maybe already know it.
For the rest, just go with the flow. Try to have as much fun as possible, every tour could be the last one.
Because this is a not-for-profit label (do you hear that irs/revenue/customs/fbi?) I'm trying to bring people the best options for shipping whilst also making it financially viable to do this. Postage prices are fucking extortionate and have only been on the increase. So, here's the breakdown on pricing that the site will offer outside of the usual standard postage rates:

IRELAND & NORTHERN IRELAND*

€4 for ALL shipping.

FREE shipping for orders over €40.

This means that all shipping to Ireland and Northern Ireland will cost either €4 or €0!!

UK & EUROPE

FREE shipping for orders over €45.

EVERYWHERE ELSE

FREE shipping for orders over €50.

*For people in Northern Ireland, put through your address as normal. This will initially come up as a UK price which is more expensive, however I will refund you the difference. If you'd like to hear the reasoning behind this, please take a seat and I will explain why...

*deep breath*

Currently, An Post allows for shipping to Northern Ireland at the same rate as within Ireland (we'll see how long that lasts...). However, Shopify does not recognise Northern Ireland as being separate to the United Kingdom in this sense (ohhhh controversial) and so forces shipping rates to Northern Ireland to be the same as across the water to England/Scotland/Wales. So, it basically makes shipping rates unnecessarily more expensive than they already are, which is fucking ridiculous as it is.

I already spoke to them trying to figure out if they can change this/complained/ranted about the post-modern impact of imperialism, but they currently can't accommodate the current socio-economic climate on this beautiful island. The fucks (still using them though).

*exhaleee*

I will say though, that they were as helpful as their system would allow, and I'm currently looking into a better long-term solution for the site. Who knows, maybe I'll fucking solve brexit while I'm at it.

So, that's why the refund policy! Put the order through as if you were in the UK, and I'll refund you the difference (or possibly even ship it from the North unless I get done for fucking smuggling...).

... COULD this be used as evidence against me? In any case, it will be less hassle than it sounds, and cheaper! Also, as always, I'll try to accommodate for punk post. If you don't know what it is, read this.
Things have been really busy with college, working, bands, life etc... and running a label on top of that isn't so easy! Who would have thought that a D.I.Y. label would have been so much fucking work?!

It's been over an entire fucking year since we've had a podcast out hahaha! That's insane. There is quite a lot of work involved with the podcasts; talking with the bands, arranging interviews, acquiring songs, and obviously the recording itself - but it hopefully won't be too long until we have something new out.

We've streamlined the site, which is a nice term for deleting some things that were just too much work. The focus for the moment is getting a functioning web-shop up and running, which is a fairly tedious process but it will happen! So keep ya eye balls peeled. Imagine actually peeling an eyeball though that's fucked.

So thanks for reading, have a look around, enjoy yourself, and listen to some fucking punk.
The band released a split 7" with Myteri in 2016 which really demonstrated the ability the band has, both in terms of technicality, and in song-writing.
Scourge was released a year (and two weeks) ago - how did you find the reception for the album?

Seemed to go down well to those that got a chance to hear it . Peoples reactions were very positive, but then again most folk don't tell you you're shite LOL.

Was the writing or recording process different than your self-titled release?

I (Greg) pretty much wrote the entire first one on my own, but Scourge was much more of a band effort with the band minus Ross in a room coming up with ideas etc .
When I heard Scourge in its entirety, I was surprised at the intensity of it - it doesn't really let up much apart the few odd breaks, at it seemed more energetic and relentless than the previous release. For a band with members who've played in a load of other bands for many years - how do you do it?! Was that the intent with this album? Was there a change in mindset?

There was no change in mindset and we approached the album the way we approach most things we do in this band i.e. to give it 100 % and do what comes natural . Don't think we had any pre-conceived notions of how things would sound, it literally just developed along those lines. I suppose it's a cliché at this stage but the current state of everything around us and the state the world is in has an effect on us when we are writing and coming up with material. The world is FUCKED and we are sinking fast , I think that sense of desperation comes through in the music on Scourge . The new material we are writing is even more bleak and pathetic.

I know Drogheda can be strange... but whats been the weirdest show you've ever played?

Thats fucking rich coming From someone who grew up in Enniskillen. Say hi to Arlene from us LOL .. (CB: he got me there) We played a gig in an Arts centre here in Drogheda, it was a project called Proto Punks that documented the history of Punk Rock in Drogheda . The line up was quite diverse and the venue was an Old Garda station currently an Arts centre which was just fucking bizarre. Lots of people had strange flashbacks of getting a hiding back in the 80's in the cells
Currently listening to my neighbours dog barking its face off which in turn is causing my dog to have a total meltdown. The latest Full Of Hell album Trumpeting Ecstasy is playing in the background . Recommended.
Thanks so much for doing this interview, I appreciate it! So can you introduce yourselves,
tell us what you do in the band, and what is your favourite drink?

Well, I will lead you guys through all of it since it is quite impossible to get all of us in a room doing it. I am Padde. One out of two guitar players and singers, the other one is Kalle. Hauke hits the drums, and Tommy is the guy on bass. We all love beer, preferably Holsten out of tall cans.

When did the band form?

Hauke, Kalle and me formed it in late 1994/95. We were called Sperrzone back then; had an extra singer, I played bass and all that changed in 1999 when we kicked out the singer, and changed the name to Instinct of Survival. Later, I quit the bass and took the second guitar place, we added Pacik on bass who left the band almost 2 years ago, so since then we have Tommy in the band.

Call of The Blue, in comparison to your earlier stuff like North of Nowhere, has a more post-punk goth vibe I think. Would you agree?

A lot of people say that. In my eyes it is just a little bit [more post-punk]. We just kicked out the metal out of our songs. Call of the blue distance is pure crust with a lot more going back to the roots of punk. More ambient like zygote or amebix. There are little hints of post-punk/goth but in my opinion this is just the result of us being us. We always played what we wanted (look at our releases). We reached an annoying point with North of Nowhere where promoters tried to book us for the weirdest metal/grind festivals, not punk related at all.... no politics behinds that. We don't want to play with unpolitical metal or porngrind bands! We are a punk band! We are punks! We wanna play with punk bands! I don't get why punk seems to transform into metal, but maybe this is just another trend. Just stay with well-played three chords and have fun!

What bands have you been listening to to influence your newer stuff?

It is not that we get influenced by recently listened to bands. For example, I am going through a Finnish punk phase, just rediscovered it and love it, that doesn't mean that we will soon sound like Kaaos or Riistetyt haha. We listen to punk since we are 12 years old, now getting close to 40, I can say that we heard a lot good bands, some got stuck, some faded away after listening to it. Bands who influences us since we started are for example: Doom, Hiatus, Deviated Instinct, Zygote, Prophecy of Doom, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Skinny Puppy, The System, Antisect, Amebix, Ent etc.

The last release you guys had was two years ago, and I think I seen recently that you're writing for some new releases. Can you tell us anything about the new stuff?! Any changes in direction with the band, or details about the releases? Please please please!

You are actually wrong. We released two split EPs last year. One with the incredible LIFE from Japan, and one with Vølkermord. We are working on new songs for a mini 12" and 5 split EPs. Not
so much changes in my eyes, just stay tuned!

You guys still keep busy with gigs, recently you played Punx Picnic and Somewhere In Nowhere. How were they?! Any cool stories?

The Somewhere in Nowhere fest was fun! Sadly, not so many people but I really enjoyed it being deep in nature with no phone reception! Next day in prague was something different! People went crazy, crowdsurfing, singing along, pogo etc! Was a perfect show! Not so many stories to tell, only passing out in bars etc. Instinct's usual party.

Craziest/funniest thing that happened at a show you guys played?

Hm, all in all not that much i think. Kalle likes to entertain the crowd with his dystopian view
I like to throw in questions which are weird just because it makes it a little more interesting, so here's one for you all - why do you play in a band? What makes you keep doing it?

Kalle, hauke and me became punks together, and since that day we are still doing/loving it. More than a lifestyle, and more than friends. We are family, and we love to spend our time together. Tommy is even longer punk than us, hung out in the squatterscene back then and lives now in an old squat in Hamburg. Simply said: punks for life!

Finally, any favourite bands you're listening to at the moment?

For the newer bands I have to mentions canadas LANGUID! Their latest release slays! Best German
band lately are PISS and best northern bands are SWORDWIELDER and GLORIOUS!

Thanks so much for the interview!!

Hope the next releases are coming soon!

Stay punk!
Hey guys, thanks a lot for doing the interview!

Can you introduce yourselves, tell us what you do in the band, and tell us two interesting facts about yourself?

Romeo - Guitar/Vocals, Self Taught programmer, Horror Movies/Books Fan.

Manuel "Gallo" - Drums/Vocals, I have Maya Blood, and also I'm a lawyer.

Orlando - Guitar, I do MMA and also a Saint Seiya fan,.

Rafael "Racho" - Bass, I'm also lawyer, and I love Pizza.

When and how did the band form?

Disterror was born in mid 2010, by Romeo (Bass/Vocals), Salxy (Guitars) and Nelson (Drums), but it wasn't until 2011 when they recorded the "Upcoming Warfare" Demo, that the band began to be actually active and performing live. Salxy left the band after the Demo, Gallo joined on Bass, and Nelson quit after the Split with MDD. Since then it's been Romeo and Gallo mostly, then Orlando joined during the recording of Catharsis, and recently Racho joined bass a few months before the Canadian Tour.

You're just back from tour in Canada - how did it go? What was your favourite

show? Tell us a story from the tour!

It was our most amazing experience so far, we loved every second of it. We met so many amazing people, and had such great moments, every show was incredible, but I think our favourite ones are the Opening Show at Bleak Life 4 in Ottawa, and the Closing Show at Loud House, Montreal. A funny story is that we almost died on our way from Montreal to Ottawa to play in Bleak Life, Orlando was already in Ottawa, so it was Romeo, Gallo, Racho, and the guys from Hatewölf in the van. We were passing through this tunnel under construction, when we lost control of the van and almost crashed with this big passing truck! Romeo was laughing like a maniac the whole time hahaha.

Catharis was your debut album, and it had a very mature, and well-formed style for a debut album. Had you worked on these songs/the album as a whole for long before the release?

Most of the songwriting was done by Gallo and Romeo during band practice, they have been playing together for many years so the songwriting process came out very natural, also Gallo's drumming style was a major factor, as previously he played Bass on Disterror, and for Catharsis he switched t drums. Labyrinth was actually completed at the last moment during Studio time, as we felt the album lacked a mid tempo driven song.

How did you find the reception for Catharsis when it was released?

Catharsis was a very personal work for us, it could be said that the whole process of making the album, was our very own Catharsis, so we were very overwhelmed by the reception. So many people liked our music, and so many good reviews, also bad ones, those are our favourite ones actually.

Gilgamesh is a pretty interesting song; pretty epic, a LOT of riffs, and over 8 minutes for a crust band is impressive! What is the sample at the start of it from?

Catharsis by Disterror

Gilgamesh was the first new song we made for the album, lots of twists and cool riffs, it was probably one of our most polished songs at the time. The sample is from the Spanish dub of "The Seventh Seal", during a scene in which the main character is questioning the existence of god and his own purpose in life.

Gallo & Racho: To know the world and all the cultures.

Orlando: Have an infinite bag of dank weed.
First of all, congrats on the new release, haven't stopped playing it. It's powerful, inventive, meaningful - it has a lot going for it, not to mention the artwork by Mr John Abell. Are you happy with the process of creating it and how it's turned out?

Over the moon with this one. We wrote pretty much all the songs in a year so it all felt quite fresh and energetic going into the studio. We put a lot of thought into the sequence of the songs and I feel like it flows much better than the first. It has a momentum and doesn't let up from start to finish. The production and artwork are spot on too.
With Along the Dew, it seems to recall the compact yet impactful style of the s/t EP, with some of the more intricate bass riffs and guitar rock riffs from Far From The Callous Crowd. Would you agree? Did you have a particular stylistic approach in mind when writing these songs? What bands were you listening to at the time?

Not at the outset but it became clear throughout the process that it was going to be more of a 'hardcore' record. I don't think it's too much of a departure from the first one, just maybe a bit heavier / more aggressive in places. We're listening to bands like Zeke, Death & Sick of it all. Maybe some of that crept in somewhere?! We've tried to write slower songs so many times but they always end up being rapid, so fuck it.

I really enjoyed the lyrical content and way in which they're put to the songs. Sometimes they're done in a more typical way, as in kind of written for the music, but more often than than not on this release they're like stories, or poems, put to music. Can you tell us maybe why you chose to write in this way, like was there an intention to allow for the lyrics to be considered on their own as poems?

I wrote them all to the music, even if it doesn't look that way cos of how they're constructed into sentences and paragraphs. I've tried writing 'line for line' and making the last word rhyme but it just doesn't work for me, so I tend to try and ramble and then make it fit the rhythm. Each one takes fucking ages, believe it or not!

Do you have particular favourite parts of the album?

The sample at the end of Chalk & Flint is a resistance song from the Spanish Civil war. The guitar reaches a top note and then Luciano Ponzetto kicks in immediately like a boot to the stomach. I thought that was pretty cool.

You have a sweet UK tour lined up - how did the release show go? Any other tour plans further afield?

Tour was great; the best one we've ever done for sure. Every gig was energetic and we really got to showcase the new material and get the record out there. We're hoping to visit the mainland in September and another UK tour in October.

I actually wasn't talking to you much about the USA tour with Conflict - how was it? How did it compare to Europe as a scene, and the reception at the shows themselves? Don't even know if I should ask but sure fuck it - what was the weirdest shit that happened on the tour?

It was class mate. Fucking hot as hell too; Texas in July is no Joke. Obviously nobody had a clue who we were over there too so it was interesting playing to completely new crowds and watching some amazing bands along the way. The oddest thing was the palaver we caused in San Antonio where the metal band downstairs were carrying a real goats head on stage. We took exception and it all got a bit messy. I'll leave it there... We ate at Denny's A LOT.

So what does Llygaid Gwyrdd mean, and what's the song about for us non-Welsh speakers?!

Green Eyes. It's just an abstract song about the grass being greener on the other side, then arriving and it's not. Making the same mistakes over and over again kinda thing.
